In addition, I was dealing with terrible foot pain that made it impossible to walk without a hob...

    temperature rating? I've seen on their website 32-45 degrees and was wondering if i could be used where i live in Florida to up in the 60's - 70's??

    • @MountainVenture

      @@fortunateson5587 Temperature ratings are tricky. It’s a shell w no insulation so it’s ability to keep one warm is dependent on what you wear underneath. In warmer temps it will trap heat like any other “breathable” shell. That being said, it does have pit zips that help dump heat, which is very helpful. Hope that helps!

    • @MountainVenture
      @MountainVenture 8 месяцев назад

      This jacket has a broad range. Due to the pit zips it can be ventilated in warmer temps or higher activity level. As the temperature drops, you can add layers underneath. It is a pretty lightweight jacket so I would not trust it for a full on expedition but for regular backpacking it is a very versatile piece of kit.

      The increased fork height slackens the head angle slightly. This slows the steering which can be advantageous at higher speeds on technical descents. The 2018 Trek has a fairly steep head angle for a trail bike by todays standards. Swapping out the fork helps with that. It also slightly raises the bottom bracket height. The Trek is also notorious for pedal strikes. It is an imperfect solution but one I have not regretted. Cheers!

      I have almost no signs of wear and no leaks. I actually wear this as my primary rain jacket - not just backpacking. The jacket is one of the most solid investments I've made in gear. I don't bring it on every backpacking trip - in the summer I go with a lighter weight jacket. Hope that helps!

    Hey Mark! I wasn’t able to secure a spot through the lottery for the happy isles start. Is the Lyell Canyon Trailhead much further along the trail? Will I miss anything big starting there? Thanks! Great vid

    • @MountainVenture
      @MountainVenture 2 года назад

      Starting at Lyell Canyon cuts off the first 20miles or so of the JMT from Happy Isles (Yosemite Valley) to Tuolumne Meadows. Yosemite Valley is one of the most majestic places on earth in my opinion. However, you can visit Yosemite Valley without a permit and day-hike all the major features. The heart of the JMT is in the big passes you will cross leading up to Mt. Whitney. You will definitely experience the best part of the trail starting from Lyell Canyon which gives out several walk up permits each day. Another option is hiking the JMT Northbound. Obtaining a walk up trail permit at Cottonwood Pass is easy as the most popular JMT direction is Southbound. The downside is that you do Whitney first and then all the big passes at the front end of the trip before you have time and trail miles to get acclimated. Good luck!

    • @screenspeak
      @screenspeak 2 года назад

      @@MountainVenture thank you for the quick response! Sounds like Lyell canyon will be our starting point this year. Good luck on your future adventures!

    Great tips! Could you share what months you were there and if you wish you would have delayed to let the snow melt more? My dad and I are doing this in early July but looks like it's gonna be a high snow year.

    • @MountainVenture
      @MountainVenture 2 года назад

      I hiked in mid July. If I had the option to defer my start time I would have. High snow and water levels make the journey more difficult. However, if you are in good shape and have a sense of adventure the added challenges are not a deal breaker. One thing to keep in mind is footwear. Deep and frequent water crossings will mean that your feet will be wet all day every day. I got used to this pretty quickly. Trail running shoes were the best option as they drained water quickly between water crossings and were not overly heavy when wet. Enjoy!

    • @Justin.dn.howard
      @Justin.dn.howard 2 года назад

      @@MountainVenture Thanks so much for the detailed response! I'll be sure to discuss the footwear options with my dad before we go, and see if there are any options for deferring or going south to north.

    Hey how’s it going great video brotha I’m new in town and was wondering where the best trail head is to get to the more techy trails. I’ve rode with my girl a few times on the flatter trails but I was looking for the chunkier stuff today and couldn’t seem to find the tail head over by oak knoll is what a local said but he didn’t seem very sure either

    • @MountainVenture
      @MountainVenture 2 года назад

      The trail head is a bit hidden. I park at Acorn (open year round) and ride through Oak Knoll camp ground which is closed in the winter. Check out the trail system in the Trail Forks app and you should be able to find it using the GPS on your phone. It is a bit of a maze so be patient and reference the app periodically. Have fun!

    I love my KUIU gear but I sometimes struggle with sizing. I am 5'11" at 212 pounds with broad shoulders and a slightly barreled chest area. I have tried the XL size (my usual size) for shirts, jackets, and vests but I find them too tight. When I go up to XXL the garments fit well but then the sleeves are too long and with the KUIU pants the legs are WAY too long - kinda have short legs, I use a 30" inseam. Anyway, KUIU makes some great gear but I just wish they would either offer more size options or just abandon the "athletic" fit. Every time I buy a KUIU piece I usually have to take it to a tailor to fix the problems and that adds to the overall final cost.
